Over the years, I’ve trained over 30,000 students in concealed carry and helped some who have never even held a gun become advanced and competitive shooters. One of the questions I have gotten over the years is, “What is the best concealed carry gun for a new shooter?”
This guide focuses on the top three guns for new shooters.
Ruger SR 22
The Ruger sr 22 has several features that are important for new shooters. First and foremost, it is super easy to operate. You can operate this gun with just two fingers. You don’t need a lot of strength to pull the trigger, making a great gun for older folks, people with arthritis, or ladies who want a really easy and comfortable firearm to start shooting.
You will see that your pinkie fits on the bottom of this gun and is very thin and lightweight, making it superb for concealed carry.
The external hammer allows you to operate the gun in both double and single-action modes. When the trigger is forward, it requires quite a bit of strength to bring the hammer back and release to fire the gun.
But when you bring the hammer back into the single-action mode, the trigger comes further back into the gun’s frame, making it easier for you to fire the gun.
The Ruger sr 22 also has a safety that acts as a de-cocker. So, if the hammer is back, all you’ve got to do is click the safety back on, and the hammer resets into the forward position.
Another great thing about this firearm is that the magazine has a little button that pulls the follower out of the way. To load this gun, compress the button, move the follower out of the way and drop your rounds in place.
The SR 22 comes with adjustable sights on the rear for windage and elevation to help you get the most accurate shot placement possible.
It also comes with various hand grip options so that you can have either a larger or smaller hand grip, making sure that the first gun you purchase is absolutely perfect and comfortable for your hands.
The magazine release and the external thumb safety can be found on both sides of the gun- pretty much ambidextrous.
The forward rail on the gun allows you to have any optic light or laser that will enable you to either see at night or acquire your target faster, depending on which optic you want to use.
The teardown is very simple. Just release the pin below, pull the gun frame back and forward, and release it off the front. Reassembly is just as simple. So, take the recoil spring and place it right into the center of the gun, remove the thumb safety, and rack that hammer back. Put the spring right into the recoil reset assembly, bring the slider back and down, and then push that reset lock in place.
It comes with a very solid lock for you to lock your first gun away from your kids or something similar and during transportation. The lock goes through the entire frame of the gun, keeping it safe.
Ruger SR 22 comes with two magazines and a great zippered carrying case, perfect for range use or home storage.
Taurus G2c 9 mm
The G2C has a variety of features that a lot of guns don’t. You’ll first notice that you have a well-raised sandpaper-like grip that will ensure the gun doesn’t ever slip out of your hands at the range or in a combat situation. In case of an emergency and your palms are sweating, the gun will not fall out of your hands.
The second important thing is that your pinky fits on the bottom of the gun despite your hand’s size.
Many people always assume that every gun is loaded. With this gun is a chamber flag, which would not go into a firearm unless the round is not in the chamber. So you can already tell the gun is unloaded without looking inside if the chamber flag is present.
It has a chamber-loaded indicator that gets raised when there is a round. So you don’t have to pick up the gun to check if it’s loaded or not.
Another feature of the Taurus G2c is the ease of tear down. To take it apart, remove the magazine, check the chamber, and double-check that your chamber-loaded indicator is not up to be sure. Pull down on the two tabs, pull backward on the gun just a little bit, and then pull your trigger. Your gun is going to come right apart. Pull the slide back on to reset it, and that’s it.
The G2c is a nine-millimeter, making it the most common and preferred caliber for concealed carry. The only downside of this gun is that it requires some upper arm strength to operate, so it is not the best for women or people with arthritis who are just getting started and want something relatively easy to use.
Smith and Wesson m&p EZ
The 380 has a bunch of features that combine the stopping power of the G2c 9mm and the ease of use of the Ruger sr 22. And here’s how the Smith and Wesson m&p Ez is simply the easiest gun to operate, period.
Similar to the SR 22, this gun comes with a chamber flag and chamber-loaded indicator. So if you have a round in the chamber, you will be notified immediately with the raised chamber loaded indicator.
The second thing you’ll notice on this firearm is that it has a raised external slide stop, so you can reach that slide stop and lock it back a lot easier.
Another potentially life-saving feature of the Smith and Wesson m&p EZ is the external grip safety. The grip safety is activated when you grip that gun properly, and the safety goes in, enabling the trigger to operate.
The benefit to you is that if a person gets that gun from you in a situation where they are attacking you, they may not be able to use it on you unless they already know and have a perfect grip on the firearm. Another situation where that can be helpful is if you have young kids in the house, they will not be able to operate it if they get a hold of it unless the grip safety is perfectly depressed.
Another thing you’re going to notice is that the magazine release is extremely easy to use and requires just a little bit of pressure to operate.
The Smith Wesson m&p EZ also comes with an optional thumb safety. You can pull the follower out of the way, which allows you to drop in a round or your snap cap extremely easily, requiring no effort whatsoever.
The stopping power of a 380 is very similar to that of a 9mm. The major difference between the two is that a 380 is slightly shorter and has less power. However, the diameter is very similar.
The Smith and Wesson m&p EZ also has a forward rail for your accessories, flashlight, lasers, and optics, and by far is my number one recommendation for concealed carriers and new shooters.
Because of its ease of use, it requires absolutely zero strength. The 3d round is competent in stopping a threat and is one of the safest guns you can get with that extra grip safety.
Get armed, get trained, carry daily, And long live the Republic.
