The House of Representatives voted in favor of Universal Background Check bill by 227-203 margin to expand background checks pertaining to gun sales in the US. This is according to Wall Street Journal on a morning that saw the debate stirring emotions bringing to the fore conservative arguments on both sides of the House.
The VOX reported, “Universal background checks remains as the top legislative priority for Everytown for Gun Safety, encompassing a gun control advocacy group and network comprised of Moms Demand Action receiving the of President Joe Biden.”
“Deemed as a transparent attempt spearheaded by gun control advocates in Congress, the bills strive to restrict rights of law-abiding Americans to address the violent criminal culture, “tells the executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action Jason Ouimet.
He added that the truth remains that neither bills are sufficient in addressing the issue. Investing full power to unelected bureaucrats to indefinitely delay lawful firearm transfers, H.R. 1446 could ultimately destroy the Second Amendment rights guaranteed to every law-abiding citizen worth its name by turning it into a privilege for a select few.
This New Bill Will NOT Deter Crime… But Will Penalize You and I!
“The H.R. 8 so-called “universal” background checks are impossible to be enforced without a federal gun registry and will not in any form deter crime. This will turn the otherwise law-abiding citizens into criminals for simply lending a firearm to friends or family members. If Congress is so concerned about the safety of law-abiding citizens, it should pass concealed carry reciprocity in ensuring that citizens can protect themselves and their families spanning across stateliness and our country during such dangerous times.”
On his part, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Alan Gottlieb warned that this would open the floodgates to even more ominous measures. He argued: “With the Thursday’s House passing of two extremist gun control measures shielding so-called universal background checks and closing the so-called ‘Charleston loophole it paves the way for Congress to focus on H.R. 127.”
H.R 127 poses as the sweeping gun control bill receiving the support of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. The latter calls for gun owner licensing and registration, mandatory psychological examinations of gun owners, mandatory gun-owner insurance, mandatory minimum prison sentences for gun owners failing to comply, and imposing bans on whole classes of firearms and original capacity magazines.”
By declaring the Second Amendment “does not give Americans a right, it seeks to protect a pre-existing right that shall not be infringed,” Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs made his opposition clear to H.R 8. It is a bill mandating so-called called “universal background checks during the one-hour floor debate in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Opponents were led by Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan waging a war on the bill and repeatedly calling it a danger to individuals and the Second Amendment. The H.R. 8 was introduced by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA and having 210 co-sponsors including three Republicans. This allowed Democrats to declare the measure as bipartisan and finally, the vote secured the favor of 8 Republicans while only one Democrat opposed it.
It comes as no surprise that the House was taking up the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021,” and H.R.1446, the “Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021,” casting a lid at the leading stories on gun control revealing the “big push” marked by gun prohibitionists declaring the background check legislation, considered as the proverbial “first step in comprehensive action.”
An interesting aspect of the debate over H.R. 8 showed the stark divide that crept between pro-rights Republicans and anti-gun Democrats.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) claimed that “more than 90 percent of Americans support universal background checks,” while insisting that H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446 “will keep guns out of the hands of those who aren’t allowed to have them in the first place.” The argument met with stiff resistance from Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) arguing that H.R. 8 will not achieve the objectives claimed by its advocates.
I Feel Like Screaming, “CRIMINALS DON’T USE BACKGROUND CHECKS!”
“By definition, criminals don’t abide by the law. It’s a fact,” he argued, “The bill will not make our communities safer and to the contrary, it propels law-abiding citizens to lose more of their Second Amendment rights.”
While Liberal Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell of California insisted that H.R. 8 takes away dangerous weapons from the hands of the most dangerous people. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) shared with his colleagues, “We are told yet again that lives will be saved but there has not been one instance of mass killing that has been debated today and no mention in the bill to serve this purpose.
“There are thousands of cases, felony cases in my court. You constantly hear that criminals are not obeying or adhering to the law. They illegally procured guns and this will not be changed for anything at all for all those we tried and convicted for getting guns. They steal. They buy them from other people stealing them. They don’t adhere to the law. Evidence that they are criminals.”
It is reported that Perennial anti-gun Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) overlooked the details and insisting that background checks take 90 seconds; 90 seconds to prevent firearms from ending up in the wrong hands, 90 seconds to prevent more of our loved ones from being killed by gun violence.”
She lauded voters in Washington State who consistently tackled gun violence, describing it as common-sense reforms in passing what is called one of the first, most comprehensive background check laws in 2014 hinting at the increase in legal age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21 in 2018. She ignored how the 2014 background check law didn’t deter the triple splaying at a teen party in Mukilteo. The year was 2016 when the young man passed the background check test. It made the whole thing tricky. Jayapal also didn’t recognize the number of murders in Seattle, considered as the most populous city, and is home to a billionaire-backed gun prohibition lobbying group that swelled last year by more than 50 percent. It is reported how she was oblivious to how criminals were getting hold of firearms was refuted during statements made before and after her speech.
On the other hand, Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) made a testimony of sort: “According to a 10-year study conducted by Johns Hopkins and U.C.-Davis as to how California background check law has no repercussion on gun homicides or suicides. There is not a single evidence. The bill doesn’t aim for public safety…to the contrary, it serves the purpose to make gun ownership legally hazardous, fraught with booby traps ensuring that no law-abiding citizen would be prepared to take a risk.
Then, there is Chip Roy (R-TX) making this assertion: “My Democratic colleagues want to take away our God-given rights to defend ourselves under the Second Amendment. This comes soon after opening our borders. This is it. Creating a gun registry in tracking guns owned by Americans. There is no way to implement what Democrats are striving to implement without doing that…We have a God-given right to defend our families against this whole tyranny and we will do it irrespective of what this Democratic Congress tries to jam through.”
And the freshman Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) was all over the place telling, “Talk about women’s rights; there is absolutely no way for you in taking my right for self-protection. I mean to ask, seriously what are we doing here?”
He floated the question: “I ask proponents of this legislation: Who do you think you are to disarm Americans and leave them vulnerable without any form of support?”
“Your aim is to defund our police and leaves us helpless to protect ourselves. Our founding fathers gave us a list and told, ‘Don’t touch them.’ I warn you to keep your hands off our Second Amendment.
The floor debate turned fiery set against the backdrop of what could look like a concerted effort in making gun control, the thorny issue of the date. In its editorial calling for more Second Amendment restrictions, the Chicago Sun Times rued loose gun laws in neighboring states “contribute to the flood of gun son the streets of Chicago,” and the surge of “gun violence” in the Windy City.
It further stated that during the last year, gun violence shot up to 52 percent in Chicago witnessing the killing of more women in such acts of violence. Domestic violence stepped by 16 percent in Illinois with the risk of homicide in domestic violence is five times higher with a gun.
In the other Washington, Georgia Congresswoman Lucy McBath was bating for the H.R. 8 and other gun control measures, reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. She lost her son to a shooting incident 8 years ago.
This New Gun Control is ONLY the Beginning!
She confessed, “It will not be an easy ride but I am convinced the time is Now. The country is really, really ripe. I cannot tell you how many people every week I’m talking to that are anxiously waiting for us to pass legislation. They are tired; they are afraid.”
In the House debate, she reiterated this position insisting: “Our vote today is (a) beginning and it’s not the end.”
